Christian singer/songwriter Mandisa has died.

Born Mandisa Lynn Hundley on October 2, 1976, she passed away in her Nashville home on Thursday.

Rising to fame as a contestant on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006, Mandisa captivated audiences with her powerful vocals, infectious personality, and unwavering faith. Despite facing criticism about her weight during the show, Mandisa embraced her identity and became an advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance.

Following her time on American Idol, Mandisa embarked on a successful music career, releasing several albums that have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. Her debut album, “True Beauty,” was released in 2007 and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. Subsequent albums like “What If We Were Real” and “Overcomer” further solidified her place as a prominent figure in the Christian music industry.

Beyond her music, Mandisa is known for her uplifting and inspirational message, often drawing from her own experiences of overcoming challenges and embracing her faith. She had become a sought-after speaker, sharing her story of redemption and hope with audiences around the world.

Her songs resonated with audiences, and JOY Radio listeners voted four of her tracks to the #1 spot on the JOY Top 20 countdown: “Unfinished,” “Bleed The Same” (with TobyMac), “Let It Rain” (with Crowder), and “Jesus Is Coming Back” (with Jordan Feliz).

Mandisa’s impact extended beyond the stage, as she was actively involved in charitable work and advocacy efforts, using her platform to raise awareness about issues such as mental health, body image, and the power of faith to overcome adversity.

JOY Radio Music Director James Kurtis reflected on Mandisa this morning. “Inspiring, transparent, genuine, enormously talented. A true gift to the Christian music community.”

Don Moen released a statement to JOY Radio saying “The news of Mandisa’s passing this morning was truly a shock. Not only was she a powerhouse of a talent but she also possessed a genuinely kind spirit. We ministered together several times, she sang background vocals on my album ‘Thank You Lord’ and joined me on several tours.”

Don also shared a touching personal memory, “On one particular tour, notes kept appearing in everyone’s bunk on the bus or in their instrument cases. These were encouraging messages like: “You are blessed and highly favored,” or “You’re such a blessing on this tour.” Only at the end of the tour did we discover it had been Mandisa.”

Mandisa was 47 years old.

A cause of death has not been released.
